Have Seductive Clarity or be Doomed!

“It doesn’t take any more effort to dream a big dream than it takes to dream a small dream.”
General Wesley Clark, Former Head of NATO Allied Troops

Have you ever set a goal and then not achieved it?

If you said yes, you’re not alone; most of us are in that camp with you.  People set goals all the time and often make little progress towards achieving them.

We set goals because we think we should, because others are setting them, or because it’s part of being in business and the accountant says that’s what we should do.

Sound familiar?

Ever wondered why you don’t achieve your goals?

The answer is really simple.  Most often people don’t achieve their goals because they’re just not that important to them.

Harsh as it may sound, it’s true.  Often we miss achieving our goals because we don’t care enough about them.

Unless we have what I call ‘seductive clarity’ about what the dream, vision or goal is, and WHY it’s important to us, then it won’t be achieved.

What’s seductive clarity

Hold tight.   I’m about to get soppy on you!

Remember that moment when you fell in love, or saw your newly born child – your baby – for the very first time?  What did you feel in that moment?

I’m guessing it was a passion, a desire, a raw need, a drive, a responsibility, a happiness!

You were seduced by love!  And that’s a good thing.

In love, we want and need that person forever and a day.  Our hearts stop, we get distracted and can’t focus on anything other than the person we have fallen in love with.

Ahhh, I still rejoice with the memories of those early moments in love! 🙂

Get seductively clear on your ‘what’ and ‘why’

Seductive clarity with your dreams, vision and goals is the same.  You must feel the utmost emotional connection with them – a love – a heart stopping importance, a must have or must achieve drive, and the feeling – the excitement – that comes with the possibility of achieving something important.

We must understand WHY the dream is so important to us.  The ‘why’ doesn’t have to be rational to anyone else. It must matter to us!

If we don’t have all that, we won’t care enough to achieve the dream, vision or goal.  And when the going gets tough (which it will), we’ll be off and onto the next shiny thing… the dream, the vision, the goal will be forgotten or buried.

Yet, the achievement of a dream, a vision or goal can be life changing.  Its achievement can make an ordinary life extraordinary, or can be a game changer in business.

Let’s get serious about this for a minute

We’re nearly half way through 2016 – yikes!!  How’s the business year progressing for you?

Same old, same old?

Or have you set a vision with some big goals that you’re on track towards achieving this year?

It’s not too late.  There’s plenty of time to nail something that’s important to you in business.  The key is to get seductively clear on what it is you want to achieve and WHY.

So go on.  Step back for a minute and think about what you’re striving to achieve in business this year.

Why are you doing it?

Why is its achievement so important to you?

In being seductively clear about and in love with your why, those emotions will keep you strong during the long hours and the ups and downs you’ll no doubt experience as you journey towards that day when you can say, ‘Eureka, I did it’, or as Sir Edmund Hillary said in 1953 upon being the first man to climb to the top of Mt Everest, ‘ I knocked the B******d off!’  🙂

Seductively clear big dreams and plenty of action……. leads to…..success – as you define it in business and in life!  I like the sound of that.

QUESTION:  Where are you at with seductive clarity in the vision and goals you have in 2016 for your business?  I’d love to know.  I’d be thrilled if you left a comment below.

The Beauty of Gratitude

The beauty of gratitude.  Hmmm, don’t you think that’s ‘pie in the sky’ sometimes – so out of reach when in the moment life is hectic and at times chaotic and difficult?

For me right now, life is going something like this.

Working long hours – loving what I’m doing and creating in the service of others.

Trying to create some semblance of balance between home and work commitments.

Loving and supporting our young teenage daughter who lives in the ‘now’….and is very into ‘her’ world.  Everyone and everything else is secondary – as a parent, some days it’s tear your hair out territory 🙂

Intermittent technology challenges that slow us down at work.

Loving a husband who’s ridiculously busy at work too.

Friends and family that I haven’t seen or chatted to in ages.

…… and so it goes on.

Know the feeling?

Life can be full, busy and tough

Yep, I get that.  Life happens and some days and weeks can be really hard going.  And there will be times when life is really, really tough.

Yet we can step away from it, if only for a moment

I know that if we lift ourselves away from the busyness, worry, tiredness, frustration and sadness, and focus on gratitude ─ simply being grateful for all that we are and have ─ then life and our vitality for it changes in a heartbeat.

So what is gratitude?

Put simply, it’s ‘the feeling of being thankful’.  It’s about taking a moment in time to reflect on all that is good; all that is beautiful; all that is abundant.

Gratitude is being thankful for the big things and the smallest of things.  It’s being thankful for the day, the clean air, the beauty and joy of life and living, and the people who share our world, our health and vitality, our achievements, and the learning, lessons and ‘failing forward’ we do in life.  We can be grateful for all of this and more.

Gratitude is what you want it to be.

Practise the gratitude attitude

You may be saying… blah, blah, blah…. 🙂 … that’s ‘touchy feely, weirdo stuff’.  For the longest time, no-one has really talked about the benefits of gratitude.  There are worldwide conversations on it now though.

How about trying it for a week or two?  Take a few minutes out of each day to quiet your mind, feel the stillness of the moment, and think only good and grateful thoughts.

For me, gratitude is something I practise every day as I take to the park on my daily 6am power walks.  Those walks are sacrosanct ‘me time’ – and I make sure they happen day in day out, as they soothe my soul……and keep me sane, balanced and happy (even in the darkest of times).

There’s even research on gratitude

Reliable research demonstrates that by experiencing the emotion of gratitude there’s a positive impact on our mental and emotional states.  Quite simply, we become happier… just because!

Certainly that is how being grateful impacts me.  I am unconditionally happy, and I love living my life that way.

Happiness is not dependent

Happiness is not dependent on income, achievement, health and fitness, or social status.  It’s a state of being.  And research also shows that some of the happiest people on earth actually have the least and live in the most difficult of situations… go figure that!

In being grateful and happy, we attract more.  We attract more prosperity and success in its widest definition.

We attract people to us, as we’re good to be around and they are energised by our enthusiasm.

Gratitude in business is critical too

Our clients want to ‘feel’ that we’re grateful for their business.  If we are and they ‘feel’ it, then they’re likely to become loyal and supportive; they become our cheerleaders.  Team members ─ be they employees, outsourced team members or collaborators ─ will be more supportive of us if they feel that they are valued.

Gratitude is a muscle

Gratitude is like a muscle that needs to be worked on to improve.  It takes time and ongoing practise for it to become better and easier to do.

The rewards are phenomenal though.  Once worked on, the glorious gratitude muscle will simply kick in most of time in life, even during the hardest of times.

So, go on.  Give gratitude a go…. At least for a week, and note how you feel.  You may be surprised.  I was when I tried it.  Now I’m a ‘gratitude groupie’.  🙂

QUESTION:  How has gratitude impacted your life? I’d love to hear your own experiences with the beauty of gratitude.  Please share a comment below and let’s get the glorious gratitude conversation going.

THE 7 Beliefs of Extraordinary People

Think of the people you admire.

Chances are, they’re just like you and me ..… ordinary people doing the extraordinary – as they (or we) define it.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, working with, coaching and interviewing the most extraordinary people over the last 30 years.

Yes, some are hugely successful entrepreneurs, business leaders, sports people, and celebrities.  Others are people who are living life on their terms, ordinary people with extraordinary lives.

There’s no straight road

Their journeys haven’t been easy or straight forward.  They’ve had twists and turns, stops and starts, successes and failures, yet they’ve risen above it all to be, have, achieve and give all that they desire.

I’ve noticed there are common threads, common beliefs that have guided those extraordinary people to be who they are.

Here are the seven beliefs of extraordinary people.  You can model these beliefs too.

Belief 1:  100 percent accountability

Life is full of tough bits.  Extraordinary people find ways to get through them.  What they don’t do is get resentful, give up or sit back in a fog of self-entitlement, waiting for their luck to change.  They understand and accept that life is a journey.  They are 100 percent accountable and responsible for everything in their lives.

Belief 2:  People matter

On one hand, this has become a truism of modern life: people matter. On the other hand, most of us forget it, every day.  Often we take our loved ones for granted.  We do what we need to, in order to keep the home fires burning or to fulfil our social or business obligations, and we forget that this is a dimension of life in which we can either succeed or… not.  Extraordinary people recognise that people are critical in all parts of their lives – business and personal – and they treasure them.

Belief 3:  Constant learning

Success in its widest definition is built on staying dynamic.  Not settling.  Continuing to learn.  Often as adults we forget how exciting it is to learn and grow, and how vital this is to a meaningful life.

Extraordinary people also grow by being productive.  They create; they don’t just consume.  It might be pottery or cupcakes or electronic music.  It could be something more amorphous: setting up a Corporate Social Responsibility Committee or putting together a library of kids’ books for the local children’s hospital.  Any process that incorporates learning, problem solving and creativity into our lives enables us to grow.

Belief 4:  No such thing as failure

Personal growth only happens when something changes, and change is often painful.  It means we risk failure, which is very often painful.  But failure is a fact of life for anyone who is dynamic, and failures are fast tracks to growth.  Extraordinary people don’t view them as failures. They see them as opportunities for learning.  We should try to fear failure less.  How about ‘failing forward’, as I call it?

Belief 5:  Everything happens for a reason

As much as this is hard to take when times are tough, we are where we are in life right now for a reason.  There are lessons and learnings to take from our current experience and situation.  There are new horizons on offer because we are at this juncture.  When we learn the lessons we move forward, often in new and unexpected ways.  Extraordinary people understand that, and look for the lessons in all dimensions, so they can move forward, fast.

Belief 6:  Commitment and focus

As Shakespeare said:  “Nothing comes from doing nothing”.  One of the fundamental traits of extraordinary people is their ability to deploy laser-like focus on achieving their goals, no matter the distractions, challenges, bumps and bruises along the way.  For as long as the goals remain relevant to them, extraordinary people remain committed and focused.  When we really focus on something, we turbo-boost our efforts and see more clearly how to do the work.

Belief 7:  Happiness and gratitude

Happiness is a decision we make.  It’s not derived from an event, nor is it dependent on somebody else.  Happiness is not a stroke of luck.  Too many people say, ‘I’d be happy if ……’ or, ‘I’ll be happy when ……….’  Pinning our happiness on something that has yet to come to pass is a sure-fire way to miss the happiness available to us in the here and now.

The practice of gratitude is absolutely fundamental to replenishing our energy reserves.  It is one of the key ways in which we choose happiness for ourselves and it also boosts our ability to empathise with others and live in a more open-hearted and generous way.

Extraordinary people know that happiness and gratitude is central to their sparkle in life.  In some way, it also outwardly contributes to their magnetism that we’re attracted to.

Simple!  Right?

You’ve made it.  They’re the seven beliefs of extraordinary people.  They aren’t unique to others. They’re simple strategies that work and can be mastered by us all.

Are you up for it?

Say yes, and become extraordinary – as you define it.

QUESTION:  Which of the seven beliefs do you practice already?  Let me know in the comments below.  I’d love to read your thoughts.

The 5 Bonuses of Giving

Life’s about giving, right?  Certainly in my world it is.  I live by the motto:  “To Give is to Live”.

For me, I feel more alive, passionate and extraordinary when I’m giving – when I’m adding something to the life of another.

My giving has been in overdrive lately …. and despite having a very hectic schedule right now, I’ve never felt more happy, alive and passionate.

And do you know what? Extraordinary things are happening for everyone in my world.  It’s electric.  It’s exciting.  It’s sizzling!

There are so many wins for everyone when we give.  Here are a few that are top of mind for me at present.

Bonus 1 ─ We feel good

I have a constant ‘smile on my dial’ right now.  Why?  Because I’m adding value to others in big and small ways.

There’s something glorious that happens when we know we’ve done something for the benefit of others, not because we have to, but because we want to.  It makes us feel good.  In actual fact, we may even feel better than the person who’s received our giving.

Perhaps it’s saying hello to or smiling at a person as we walk down the street.

Or giving a bunch of flowers or other gift.

Maybe it’s passing on knowledge and experience….

The ways of giving are endless, and it feels really, really, good.

Bonus 2 – People are grateful

We should give freely and without expectation.  When we do, the side benefit is that the receiver is often very grateful for our kindness and generosity.  And right now we need to celebrate more kindness in the world, don’t you think?

Bonus 3 – We help others to be more successful

In my experience, with more giving comes more success.

We’re all full of knowledge, experience and wisdom that when we share it, it helps others to be more successful.  Perhaps it’s a connection you make for them, or some business or life advice.

When we share our gifts, the world is more plentiful.

Bonus 4 – Greater opportunities appear

You’ve heard the saying: “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go in the company of others”.  I know that to be true.

When we have conversations, share, give or collaborate, greater opportunities often appear as the ‘master-mind’ is at play.  As my mother used to say, “two heads are better than one”.

Together, we think differently, at times bigger, often better… we all get better results, and that’s uplifting.

Bonus 5 – Good things come back to you

When we give, it’s also good to receive.  Bob Burg, in his best -selling book:  The Go-Giver, talks about the 5 Laws of Giving – one of them is Receptivity – we must be willing to receive.  For some of us, that’s easier said than done.  I’ve certainly had to learn that skill.

When we give to others, they’ll often give back to us in ways we didn’t expect (and that’s a good thing – surprise is good for the soul).

Give, give, give, ASK.  It’s good to ask.  Ask for guidance, help, support.

Be vulnerable.  Be brave.  Be courageous.  Be visionary.  The reasons for asking come in many forms, and good people want to help us.

When we give, people will help us in return.  The circle of life.

Your turn

How can you give more of yourself to others?  Whose life can you make a difference to today?

Perhaps that’s a daily action.  Make a difference in the life of someone each day.  If we all did that, is it too big a hope to think that our world would be a happier, kinder, smarter and more successful place to be?  I think not.

QUESTION:  Have you experienced the bonuses of giving?  I’d love to hear your stories.  Please leave a comment below.

7 Secrets of Successful Business Owners

I love studying successful people.  In fact, I’ve made it a lifetime habit and in doing that, I reckon I’ve uncovered the 7 key secrets to being a successful business owner.

I hope they provide inspiration to you as we enter Q2 of 2016.  Yep, Q1 is nearly done and dusted.  Arghhhh, the year is going too fast.  Do you agree?

Secret 1:  Self Belief

Successful business owners always believe in themselves, and often they think BIG!  They have great vision.  They have an unrelenting belief that they will achieve everything they set out to do.  They have a single minded commitment to their dream and vision, and an unshakeable passion for what they are doing.

They also take massive action.  They are not afraid of failure.  You see, for every mistake they make, they learn the lessons and move on.  (Hmmmm……many of us could take a lesson from this).

Secret 2:  Set a Goal and GO!

Successful business owners set goals; they make decisions and they act.  Then they quickly evaluate the outcomes.  If the goal and action were wrong, they alter the course of action, and move on.  Movement and momentum are keys.

Successful entrepreneurs are in a hurry.  They have a ‘go-for-it’ or ‘get-out-of-it’ attitude!

Secret 3:  Stand Out

Successful business owners step outside the box and head the other way – they don’t copy others.  They break the rules!  They forge new and exciting frontiers, or they find new and interesting ways of doing things.

They also network widely because they’re increasing their net-WORTH in doing so – not just in monetary terms, but as an expert in the market.  They build a rock solid reputation as more people get to know them.

They’re strong relationship builders.  Have you ever watched a successful business owner at a networking event?  They will ‘work the room’, getting to know as many people as possible.  They are beginning the process of building relationships that are for two way benefit.  They’re genuinely interested in the success of others, and will support others towards their success.

Secret 4:  Seize Your Market

Successful business owners have a laser focus on the market that they are in and want to conquer.  (Nicheing is key here). Consider the difference between a machine gun that scatters bullets versus a snipper gun that aims and hits the target.  They’re snipers!

Most importantly, they give value.  For every $1 spent they want to ensure they give at least $5 in value back to their customers.  They come from a position of service.  It’s all about the customer experience.

Customer profitability is also key; they get to know their customers and in doing so, will understand how they can add further value to their customers, which of course leads to increased profitability, and at times, new product/service ideas.

Follow-up and feedback is key!  Successful business owners are fuelled by customer feedback, as it helps them improve their products and services.

Secret 5:  Strong Leadership

As leaders, successful business owners impart their vision to staff, customers and other stakeholders.  They are positive and they can tolerate ambiguity.  They’re very flexible and able to change direction when necessary in order to achieve their vision.

Successful business owners surround themselves with excellent managers; they build top notch business teams.  They are not afraid to have very clever people working for them.  They are excellent delegators too.

Successful business owners recognise the importance of strong business management, including: financial management, marketing/sales management, operations management and customer service.  With the advance of technology, they drive their businesses hard in terms of systemisation, automation and where possible, outsourcing non core functions.  They create processes that are replicable through systemisation.

Secret 6:  Sacrosanct:  Time!

Time is money, and successful business owners understand the value of time.  They know how to focus on what is important and where they should spend their time and energy.  Successful business owners leverage other people’s time.

Secret 7:  Self Improvement

Successful business owners spend time improving themselves.  They’re attracted to ongoing learning and knowledge in all its forms.

They also allow time to re-energise.  They take time out with family and friends, and for recreation.

These days many successful business owners also take their health seriously, and include exercise as part of their daily routine.

7 Secrets in the 2nd Quarter

As we head into Q2 in 2016, I hope these 7 secrets help you to achieve your business plan for the rest of the year.

One of my favourite quotes is:  Dream It, Believe It, Work It, Achieve It!  I think that sums up the 7 Secrets in a nutshell.  What do you think?

QUESTION:  What’s your business vision, and what must you achieve in Q2 to bring it to life?  I’d love to hear your thoughts, so please leave a comment below.

Random thoughts and thank yous… from me

Do you recognise any of this in your life?  Right now, this is my reality.

Working long hours

while trying to balance a home life

…and feeling very guilty that work is taking over

knowing my family is playing second, third or fourth ‘fiddle’

especially my young teenage daughter who’s on school holidays and needs some ‘mummy time’ – when it suits her.

Looking forward to a break over Easter….

…but too exhausted to head away.

Loving the northern hemisphere Spring that’s unfolding

especially in the quiet 6am morning dew as I treasure my daily ‘me-time’ on my power walks.

Back to the office.

Some days are fantastic… and others are a challenge….

My vision is unfolding

yet some of the hurdles are high and hard to jump over.

And yes, I fail to achieve them at times.  I stumble and fall.

For a ‘recovering perfectionist’, that’s hard!

Yet, I get up.  I keep going.

I’m keeping the faith….

I’m committed to my passion – my purpose and vision.

Growing our businesses is not linear or easy.  There are constant ups and downs.  It takes commitment, focus and hard work.  It takes sacrifice.  Yet, if we believe in what we’re doing, we keep going.  We keep the faith.  We keep believing.

And even in the darkest, hardest of moments…. There are glimmers of light.  Stars that shine, brightly.  If we look for them.

Thank you

Through the craziness of the ‘busy-ness’ of evolving my business to support more business owners around the world achieve the success they desire, it’s people who make it worthwhile.

It’s you who counts for me.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for being a part of my community, and for letting me enter your email inbox each week. Thank you for reading my blog.  We are all inundated with ‘stuff’, so I know it’s a privilege to be a part of your world.

I’m also grateful for those who connect with me on all the various social media we have at our disposal.  For me, it’s LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.  Soon it will be YouTube and podcasting too.  I read every message that people leave for me.  I feel grateful each time a message is offered, and for the opportunity I have to contribute to someone’s life in a small, yet meaningful way.

I am so grateful to all my clients too.  While I guide them to achieve the extraordinary in their businesses and lives…. I always learn from them.  Thank you for so openly sharing the reality of your world, and letting me work with you to create a new and better tomorrow for you and your families.

People are so kind, so generous

It’s the people we have in our lives who matter.

I am forever wowed by the generosity and kindness of others.  If we look for it we always find it.  Perhaps it’s a case of ‘we reap what we sow’ as I have always tried hard to be a giver to others, and to be kind.

Plus through talking and sharing with our experts, I’ve been introduced to so many people who share my business vision and who want to support me to ‘bring it to life’.

Wow.  It’s always about people!  I am so grateful.

We must find the beauty

Even when the going is tough and the days are long…. there’s always something to be grateful for.  Something to smile about!  A lesson learnt.  A kindness offered.  A helping hand!

For me the joy of life, in good times and bad, is to find the beauty of the moment.  Sometimes that’s easy and at other times, it’s harder.

But if we look for it, it will always be there for us, shining brightly.

Thank you for being a part of the beauty of my world.

12 Top Tips for Successful Business Networking

Some of us love it.

Many of us hate it.

What is it?

Networking!

The mere thought of networking sends shivers up the backs of some. Why? There are a myriad of reasons, including:

  • ‘I don’t know what to do.’
  • ‘I don’t know what to say.’
  • ‘I don’t like being ‘sold to’ at the event.’
  • ‘I don’t like being ‘spammed’ with sales pitches after the event – often by email.’

….you get the drift….

Personally, I really like networking. I love meeting interesting people, connecting with them, and often, connecting them with others where a beneficial relationship might develop.

Here are my 12 top tips for successful business networking.

1. Be prepared – do your homework

If possible find out who will also be at the networking event. Learn more about the other networkers. Know the people you’d most like to meet at the event.

2. Be interesting – intriguing or elusive, even

When you are asked the age old question: “What do you do?”, don’t say I’m an accountant or a lawyer or a website developer, or whatever it is that you do. You may well be the third accountant they’ve met that day and they’ll think ‘oh, another one’. Yawn!

Be creative in your answer. Create a little mystery. Give an answer that begs another question. One that might be “Oh, that’s interesting – tell me more”, or “Wow,– I have no idea what that means – tell me more”. I promise, you’re more likely to be remembered if you’re intriguing.

3. Be current – have some topical small talk ready

Once introductions are out of the way, start with small talk. Find something topical that’s of mutual interest. That settles everyone into the conversation.

4. Them before you – get to know them

When the conversation circles back into work mode, focus on them first! We love nothing more than talking about ourselves. Get them talking about themselves and their work! Later you can mention a little more of what you do… carefully. No sales pitches. Remember this is only stage one of the ‘getting to know you’ process.

5. Engage in the moment – treasure the meeting

For the time you are with the person you’ve just met, they must become your world. Be fully present and engaged with them. No looking around the room for the next person you want to talk to.

6. Be helpful – give

Remember ‘give before you receive’ or ‘deposits before withdrawals’. What can you do to help them at the event? Can you introduce them to someone they’d like to meet? Perhaps you can share some useful information with them. Ask the question. Give, give and give some more.

7. Study body language – it will reward you

Body language sends out load of signals. Learn to read it. You’ll get a sense as to whether there’s some chemistry happening between you and the person you’re talking to.

8. Quality v quantity – always

While some people thrive on collecting as many business cards as possible at networking events, most often those cards are worthless. Instead have a few quality conversations with people you are genuinely interested in meeting.

9. Shake hands – it’s professional

At networking events there’s nothing more uncomfortable than being offered a handshake and not having yours free. Networking is about work. It’s not dinner and drinks, so never have your hands filled with food and drink. That’s awkward when you’re meeting people you really want to network with.

10. Be you – always

Be you. Don’t be some ‘plastic fantastic’ person who takes over the room. People are looking to build authentic, trusted relationships and friendships with real people. Show them the real you.

11. Be kind – seek out the people who are alone

Some people go to networking events and simply don’t know what to do to get into conversation, so they lurk around the edges, often staring at their phone in the hope that someone will talk to them. Be the one who helps those who aren’t confident about networking to get started. They will thank you for it.

12. Remember… you are OK

Finally, my biggest tip! Not everyone will like you or want to get to know you some more. And that’s OK. We can’t and won’t be liked by everyone. Get over thinking that you can and will. Focus on those with whom you built a genuine connection. Start taking those connections to the next level.

Successful business networking is a journey. It takes time. Take it slowly in the first meeting and develop the relationship over time. You will be rewarded.

Watch out for some exciting news coming soon on how you can develop your business networking skills…. I can’t wait to share it with you. 🙂

The ONE thing that will make a difference in our business

‘A pinch and a punch for the first of the month…’

A new month dawns and for those of us in the northern hemisphere, it’s the first day of Spring.  How are you feeling?

Excited because you’re on track with your business plan?  Congratulations if you’re in that situation.  Keep up the great work.

Or perhaps you’re worried because you aren’t?

If you’re in the latter camp – feeling worried or frustrated that you’re behind where you want and need to be in business right now, then I can relate to that.

Me too!!

The universe conspired against my business in February with constant technology challenges.  All this led to constant business interruptions.

So, we’re behind where we should be, with a number of key business goals unachieved as of 29 February.  Grrr!!

What happens next?

Back to the business plan

When working with clients and in my own business, we focus on the following five key areas in the business plan:

  • Marketing
  • Sales
  • Finance
  • Operations/Systems
  • Team

So what happens next is that we review each goal and action item in the above areas, and we ask the BIG question…

What’s the ONE thing that will make the biggest difference NOW?

For instance, if your revenue is under budget, what’s the one thing that you must do now to drive more revenue to your business?

Is it having a sale or special promotion? Is it launching a new product or service? Is it following up with potential clients in your marketing pipeline?

If revenue is good but profit is lower than budgeted, what is the one thing that you must do now to address that?

Perhaps it’s you or your accountant reviewing your line items and undertaking a ‘common sizing’ exercise with your financials. Perhaps it’s looking at more efficient ways to manage and run your business to reduce overhead. For instance, systemising, automating and perhaps outsourcing some elements of your business.

If cash flow is a major issue for your business (and it is for many businesses), what’s the one thing you must do now to address that? Perhaps it’s reviewing your accounts receivable register and creating a new system for ensuring timely payment. Perhaps it’s changing your terms of business. Perhaps it’s factoring your receivables.

What’s the one thing that will make the biggest difference in your business right now? Work it out and do that!

Get your business back on track and fast!!

Don’t let your business control you. If you don’t take control of the month end results and address the issues, your business will control you and your lifestyle.

Don’t put your head in the sand and hope that things will get better in March. They won’t unless you’re in charge of your business.

Review and evolve your business plan to ensure you achieve the key performance indicators you’ve set for yourself and your business in 2016.

Move projects around to other quarters in the year if they aren’t ‘business critical’ now. I’ve had to do that with a key project I planned to launch in March. It’s now been put back to June to give me time to catch up elsewhere on projects that are more important to me and my business.

Re-double your efforts on the critical elements of your business and you should see the results as the months pass by.

What’s critical in business is the viability of your business. Doing the basics well is key to success in the long term.

Those basics are:

  • Having a clear strategy and business plan.
  • Having a clear marketing plan that results in prospects coming into your ‘marketing funnel’ so you can communicate with them over time.
  • Having an effective sales process that converts prospects into customers.
  • Reviewing your financials each month against a budget.
  • Having a clear process to recruit, retain, train and engage staff (directly or outsourced) so they can do their jobs to the best of their ability.

Do all that and you will reap the rewards in business.

Question: What is the one thing you’re focused on in your business right now?  For me, it’s broadening my marketing so that my business goes global (you’ll hear more on that soon).

Would some guidance from me be helpful to you? If so, please arrange a free 30 mins Skype strategy meeting with me. Here’s my calendar to make an appointment. I’d love to support you in some way to gain ‘seductive clarity’ in any aspect of your business or life.

THE 5 Ps to Business Riches!

We see it all the time, don’t we? The ‘small business done good’ syndrome!

You know, the young guy or gal who’s had their business bought for millions by a major player, and they’re set for life. Instant millionaires!

Or the business owners who are in the Rich Lists that appear all over the world.

Or our business colleagues who seem like they’re doing really well as they have the house(s), cars, lifestyle, money, etc etc.

Business riches! What are they? They’re different for each of us. It might be large amounts of money in the bank. Or growing our business – perhaps we become CEO or chairman. It might be lifestyle – pulling back and having the choice, the freedom to do what we want, when we want.

What does ‘business riches’ mean for you?

Here’s what I know, having been a business owner since my early 20s and a consultant, coach, mentor to many business people. Business riches don’t happen overnight.

In this ‘me, me, me’ and ‘now, now, now’ world in which we live, in my experience that’s what so many business owners and entrepreneurs are seeking. The quick buck. The easy ride. The big success. Now!

Well, as many of us know, it doesn’t very often happen like that. The overnight success stories are generally years in the making. Or the zillion dollar buyouts by Facebook, Google and other big players are one in a million outcomes – at best!

THE 5 Ps to Business Riches is what it takes to achieve success

1)  Passion

We’ll only achieve the business riches we want if we’re passionate about what we do in business, every day. If we’re longing for the weekend each week, that won’t cut it. We’ll never achieve success.

We need to live and breathe what we do. People around us need to feel, hear and smell our passion for what we do and how we’re making a difference in the niche we operate in. If they can’t, as potential customers – they’ll go elsewhere. As potential staff – they’ll look for jobs elsewhere too. As potential JV partners – they’ll head for the hills.
Passion is critical to success. It’s passion that gets us through the tough times. The lean times! The ugly, challenging times!

2)  Positioning

What market niche are we serving? We can’t be everything to everybody. If we try, we’ll be nothing to everybody.

When we’re clear on what our niche is, then positioning is also about our business model. What are we doing and how are we doing it? Where’s the money? Is it a hobby or a business? How do we take our potential customer and turn them into paying customers who love us and want to stay with us for a long time?

3)  Personalisation

People want to buy from people they can relate to. People who let their personality shine through! Not ‘snake-oil sellers’ – we’ve all had a few of those in our lives (I certainly have). We want to do business with people who are authentic (sorry, that word is really overused at present – I don’t like it either! :)) We want to work with and buy from people who are honest, full of integrity… and good at what they do… the experts.

Standing out in your niche as the expert, the authority in your market, is also key to business riches. Why blend in? Why be bland? Those who are extraordinarily successful stand out… they get noticed.

4)  Performance

‘Nothing comes from doing nothing’ says our friend, William Shakespeare. Of course he’s right. Yet so many people want success without putting in the hard yakka (that’s an antipodean phrase word for hard work).

Consistent hard work… over and over again… through good times and bad, often with a lot of sacrifice along the way. That’s what it takes to achieve business riches.

The key is to do the work. Consistently and constantly!

5)  Persistence

Let’s not forget the final ‘P’. Persistence. Don’t give in. Don’t give up.

If you’re passionate about what you do and there is a monetise-able business model attached to it, then keep on grafting. Keep up with the work and it will pay off.

Success will take time though.

Persistence is where the money is. Going the extra mile over and over again is where the business riches are.

… and then the cup runneth over…

I know in my own journeys over +25 years of business ownership that it’s always darkest before dawn. That when we feel we can’t go on… something carries us on (it’s generally passion, belief and bloody mindedness).

And then something clicks. Something works. Something happens… and the cup does runneth over… and that is the most wonderful moment!

Yet, in looking back, it’s always the journey and the learnings along the way that I’ve remembered most fondly. Why? Because I’ve always taken those experiences – good and bad – into my next ventures in business and life… in the never ending cycle of lifetime learning, which is so central to who I am in.

So treasure the journey, focus on your 5Ps, and business riches will come your way… eventually.
